In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the July 21,1918 attack on Orleans by the German submarine U-156, the Centennial Commemoration Ceremony will be held at Nauset Beach. During the attack, a tugboat was badly damaged, barges were sunk, crews and families abandoned their vessels, and two people were injured. Several shots fired from the U-boat hit the Orleans shore, making Orleans the only place on US soil to receive enemy gunfire during World War I. The Nauset Sea Scout Ship 72 will display a Race Point Surfboat with oars on a trailer with scouts in uniforms.
