2018 State of Wellfleet Harbor Conference Kicks Off Saturday

WELLFLEET – The annual State of Wellfleet Harbor Conference is coming back to town this week.

At the 16th consecutive conference, numerous scientists and department heads will be presenting their findings on everything from the state of the town’s shellfish industry to the deposition of off-shore sediment.

“There is something for everyone this year. We have presentations on water quality, shellfish, geology, seals, river herring, birds and even sea turtles,” said Abigail Franklin Archer, the founder of the conference.

“I started off my role with the conference as coordinator while I was working for Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. It was just an idea whose time had come. Everyone came together at the moment and realized that there’s a lot of amazing science going on in Wellfleet Harbor,” she said.

Afternoon talks will focus on the migration of Whimbrels, a shorebird that spends time in Wellfleet during fall migration, and the science that’s being advanced by the Cape’s annual cold-stun sea turtle phenomenon.

Presenters include Wellfleet shellfish constable Nancy Civetta and Geologist Mark Borrelli of the Center for Coastal Studies.

While the conference is meant to provide an extensive review of everything, good and bad, happening in the harbor, Archer says that Wellfleet Harbor is currently in a good state.

“Wellfleet Harbor has a lot of people doing amazing things for it. In general, I would say the state of Wellfleet Harbor is good, and that’s because of all the people volunteering, the town staff in Wellfleet Harbor, and all the amazing organizations we have doing science out on the harbor. So, it’s a well-loved body of water,” Archer said.

The conference will be held on Saturday, November 3 from 8:30 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. at the Wellfleet Elementary School. The event is free and open to the public.
