Agway Presents “Exploring Backyard Chickens: Getting Started”

Two Free Seminars with Author & Chick Expert Melissa Caughey

Agway of Cape Cod will host free seminars on the topic of “Exploring Backyard Chickens: Getting Started” with seasoned chick expert and author Melissa Caughey.  Two seminars will be held.  The first will be Thursday, March 28 at 6:30 PM at Agway of Orleans (20 Lots Hollow Rd.). The second will be Saturday, March 30 at 11 AM at Agway of Dennis (686 Rt. 134).

Caughey, author of the award-winning blog Tilly’s Nest, will lead an engaging talk geared for both novice and seasoned chicken keepers.  She’ll cover the basics of starting a backyard flock, including breed selection, where to purchase baby chicks, egg know-how, poultry nutrition, housing needs, predator protection, gardening with the flock and the many rewards that chickens bring.  Following the seminar, she’ll sign copies of her two books – “A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens” and “How To Speak Chicken.”

In addition to being an expert backyard chicken keeper, Caughey is a beekeeper, Master Gardener, crafter, cook and nurse practitioner. She regularly contributes to HGTV, DIY Network, Angie’s List, Grit Magazine, Community Chickens and Keeping Backyard Bees. Her first best-selling book, A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens, has won the 2016 Learning Magazine Teacher’s Choice Award and the 2016 American Academy for the Advancement of Science’s Prize for Excellence in Science Books. Her latest best-selling book, How to Speak Chicken, has been named as one of 2017’s Best Bird and Birding Books by Forbes Magazine and has won Silver in the Foreward INDIES Book of the Year Award in the Pets and Animals Category.

The seminars are free to attend and no reservations are necessary.  For more information, visit agwaycapecod.com.
