Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary

Raise a kayak paddle with Mass Audubon naturalists as they delve into the fecund waters of Barnstable Harbor. One of the largest tidal inlets on the north Cape, Barnstable Harbor provides critical habitat for many of Cape Cod’s famous bird, fish, crustacean and mollusk species.

As you paddle along the marsh banks and look down into the waters below, keep an eye out for horseshoe crabs borrowing into the sand and the shadows of bluefish as they dart into deeper channels. During the late summer, returning shorebirds pass through on their way from far northern haunts to once again put on weight for their continued flight southward. Laughing Gulls, Bonaparte’s Gulls and Ring Billed Gulls are all common sights as they wheel and dive over forage fish being swept along by the harbor’s swift currents.
