Yarmouth Port, MA, October 2, 2018 – CARE for the Cape and Islands is participating in Cape Cod & Islands STEM Week by hosting an event Wednesday, October 24, 5-7PM at Cape Cod Community College. The event features an evening of Ocean Plastics awareness and student films exploring problem-solving in the region’s Blue Economy. The documentary “Straws”, a locally produced “Skip the Straw” film about students taking action against plastics in the ocean, and student films about their work with regional STEM-rich institutions will be screened, followed by a discussion.

A variety of local nonprofit environmental organizations including NOAA/Stellwagen Bank, Atlantic Shark Conservancy, and OPAK will share materials related to plastic pollution and display art connected to the subject as part of the event.

Students, schools and businesses are asked to accept the challenge to say no to plastic straws, (and other single-use plastic items such as silverware, beverage bottles if they choose) for one week, October 21-27 to help raise awareness of plastic pollution, in conjunction with the event.

It is estimated that 500 million straws are used daily in the US alone. Plastic straws, caps, food wrappers, beverage containers, and cigarette butts are among the top ten items found during beach cleanups. Many of these items can take 400 or more years to degrade, causing harm to marine life and human health.
