“Postcards from Buzzards Bay” is a celebration of the great body of water that shapes the lives of all who live and work in and around this wonder of nature. The seven-movement work brings to life the many ways that we encounter, embrace and endure this wonderful Bay. Musical metaphors depict scenes and happenings near Cuttyhunk, the dangerous shoals of the Elizabeth Islands, a Marion Regatta, a squall off the coast of Dartmouth, the departure of the fishing fleet from New Bedford and sunset at Woods Hole.

The Tri-County Music Association commissioned Cape Cod composer Michael Donovan to write this original composition. A 30-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Major Donovan was the commander of the 567th Air Force Band from 1992 to 2002.

Maestro Philip Sanborn will lead the Tri-County Symphonic Band in this premiere of “Postcards from Buzzards Bay.” As part of the concert, the band will also perform works about the sea by James Fulton, Francis McBeth, Robert Russell Bennett, Ralph Vaughn Williams, John Phillip Sousa and a new work by Rochester resident and composer John Wallace.

In addition to the musical performance, local artists will exhibit works celebrating Buzzards Bay. Buzzards Bay Coalition President Mark Rasmussen and Community Boating Center Executive Director Andy Herlihy will also be on hand before, during and after the concert to share information about the important work of these two organizations to connect more people to Buzzards Bay through boating and outdoor exploration.

A portion of ticket sales benefits the Buzzards Bay Coalition.
