On Thursday, November 16, at 5:30 p.m., join us at our monthly “Book to Movie Night” at Dennis Public Library.  This month’s feature is the 2017 war drama The Zookeeper’s Wife based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Diane Ackerman.  Dr. Jan Zabinski (Johan Heldenbergh) and his wife Antonina(Jessica Chastain) are proprietors of the Warsaw Zoo, one of the largest in 1930’s Europe. On September 1, 1939 Antonina and her son witness the air attack on Warsaw from German forces.  The zoo is hit. Many animals are killed while numerous escape.  Dr. Lutz Heck (Daniel Bruhl) who is in charge of the Berlin Zoo is Hitler’s head zoologist, but he is also jealous of Jan’s success.  He offers to take their cherished animals and keep them safe until the end of the war, but later returns with Nazi soldiers to kill the surviving animals. The zoo must close. As the inhumanities perpetrated by the Nazi’s escalate, Jan and Antonina decide to use the zoo and its’ tunnels and cages to safeguard Jewish families. This is accomplished at great personal risk as even the most innocent association with Jewish individuals could cost them their own lives.  The book relies mainly on the well documented diaries of Antonina.  The Zabinski family was able to rescue over 300 Jewish men, women and children.  After the war, the Zabinski’s rebuilt the zoo and it continues to operate.  Rated PG13, this film has a run time of 2 hours and 7 minutes. Closed captioning is available. We’ll provide snacks and drinks. The Dennis Public Library is located at the corner of Route 28 and Hall Street in Dennis Port.
