In 2017-18, Kathy Schatzberg spent 7 months in Jerusalem through Volunteers in Global Service (VGS), a new organization which places retirees in volunteer situations with NGOs that have interfaith or peace & justice missions. She was placed at Tantur Ecumenical Institute, a center of scholarship and dialogue run by Notre Dame University — on a hill in Jerusalem, overlooking Bethlehem. In this presentation, Kathy will display slides and briefly describe both VGS and Tantur and then go on with a discussion of the multi-religious and interfaith dynamics in the Holy Land, as well as aspects of the “Israeli-Palestinian conflict” (a phrase that she feels oversimplifies a very complex set of issues. The presentation will include substantial time for Q&A. Kathy is the former president of Cape Cod Community College and a writer who blogged about her experiences in Israel/Palestine and authors a monthly column, “Community Counts,” in the Barnstable Patriot. She has a lifelong interest in learning, traveling, and understanding the world’s religions and political systems.
