Fishing Alliance to Discuss Herring Trawlers Effect at Final Meet the Fleet Event

CHATHAM – The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance will discuss the effect of herring trawlers on the local industry at its final Meet the Fleet event of the year.

The alliance is working to create a no fish zone for industrial trawlers off the Cape to protect near shore fishing grounds and herring, which are a source of food for whales and other marine species. Herring are also eaten by humans and used as bait for other fisheries, including lobster.

Current regulations allow the midwater trawlers to fish from three miles offshore from Provincetown past the islands.

The alliance is working to move the herring trawlers at least 50 miles offshore.

The Meet the Fleet event is September 27 at the Fishermen’s Alliance on Route 28 in Chatham from 5 to 7 p.m.
