‘The Toll of Service on Military Families’ Speaker Series Coming to Cape Cod Community College

WEST BARNSTABLE – A speaker series dedicated to educating the public of the affects military service has on the families of servicemen is coming back to Cape Cod Community College this week.

The Toll of Service on Military Families is hosted by the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center and features family members of United States military service men and women who talk about the experience of having a child, sibling or parent in the military.

“It will be Mr. Monti’s insight into the impact of military service on the veteran family,” said Executive Director of the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center Regina Giambusso.

“Part of our mission at the Cape and Islands, one of our many missions, is to better inform the public and heighten the awareness about the impact of military service on both individuals and families. So, this might be an important insight into what families may have to endure as a result of their child’s military service.”

This year, the program is presented by Paul Monti. Paul is the father of Jared Christopher Monti, a solider in the U.S. Army who died in Afghanistan on June 21, 2006 at the age of 30.

During this year’s program, Paul Monti will speak to attendees of his experience as a military father and the impact Jared’s service had on himself and his family.

“Whenever we’ve done some research on Mr. Monti we’ve always heard he’s a great speaker. He emphasizes the fact that Jared’s act of courage was not a one-time act in his life, that it was the end of a history of a young man with a great deal of character,” Giambusso said.

“So, it’s important to us to present that to the public, what character looks like, what commitment looks like and the willingness to sacrifice for a greater cause. They’re kind of precious attributes not often seen today and we’d like to highlight that in the context of military life.”

Jared was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor – the highest honor in the U.S. military – in 2009 for his heroic actions during the War in Afghanistan. Paul received Jared’s Medal in a ceremony from President Barrack Obama in 2009.

The program will be held at Cape Cod Community College on Friday, April 26. While admission is complimentary, space is limited and guests are asked to RSVP by sending reservations to [email protected]
