Marvel at a Herring Cove Sunset

Picture 1 of 10

Some of the most vibrant, magical sunsets occur at Herring Cove. Orange light on the water and views for miles make for the perfect summer (or winter, like this photo!) sunset spot.

Love Cape Cod? Stay tuned for new photographs of Cape Cod taken by CapeCod.com’s photographer Kaitrin.

Kaitrin Acuna grew up in Connecticut and moved to Cape Cod after finishing college. She studied at the University of Connecticut and University College Dublin to obtain a BFA in Photography.

When she’s not exploring the Cape for CapeCod.com, Kaitrin is likely still with a camera in hand, working on a variety of fine art photo projects.

Over the past four years, she has received twelve artist grants to pursue a variety of photographic series around New England and Europe, and has exhibited in shows at the William Benton Museum of Art, the Ely Slade House Museum, as well as several local galleries.

Outside of the photographic world, Kaitrin can be found painting colorful art cars, trying new foods, and planning to travel wherever she can get to.

Pilgrim monument was built from 1907-1910. President T. Roosevelt attended the laying of the cornerstone and President Taft attended the dedication once completed.

I grew up in Provincetown, surrounded by all its beauty. When I was a little girl Harry Kemp was the poet who walked around with a long black coat and scared the beJesus out of me. My generation had so much freedom. At 5 I would walk alone to get our daily Portugese bread. One day, walking home with our bread I ran into the Artist Gammel. I knew who he was. He asked me to pose for him. In my 6 year old brain I thought he was proposing to me. He looked to be at least 100. I called him a dirty old man and ran home crying. When I got home and told my mother that he wanted to marry me she told me he was a famous artist and did not want to marry me. He wanted to paint a portrait of me. She took my hand and we walked to his studio.
That began my summer of pure hell posing for him. He was always yelling at me— saying I was moving (I wasn’t but as soon as he would turn back to the canvas I would squirm and stick out my tongue at him). When he unveiled my portrait he told the guests and reporters that he would never paint the portrait of another child. I saved the world!! I was 6.
I have been trying to locate that portrait for years. Last I heard it was owned by an elderly woman in California who is surely now deceased. The portrait is called ESTELLE AND THE TWINS. Can anyone help me locate it? I would like to bring it home to my family.

The daughter of R. H. Ives Gammell, Elizabeth Ives Hunter, is the former head of the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. She is expected to be there this coming week for an exhibit of her late husband, Robert Douglas Hunter’s works. You could probably contact her through the museum., Perhaps she would have some idea of how to locate the portrait. Hope it works out for you.

    • Estelle, it is catalogued in the Smithsonian! 😉
I googled it & found it.

  3. How could they get the build date of the Pilgrim Monument so wrong?!
