Memorial Day Events on the Cape – 2019

Memorial Day is a day to remember and pay respects to those who lost their lives fighting for our country. We owe them a great deal of respect and thanks for helping preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Let us not lose the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Operation Flags for Vets – Saturday, May 25th

Operation Flags for Vets will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.  Help us Honor Our Nation’s Heroes by placing 77,000 Flags on their graves.  All are welcome.  A brief ceremony will take place.

15th Annual Troops in the Spotlight – Saturday, May 25th through Sunday, May 26th

Cape Cod Cares for the Troops will hold their 15th Annual Troops in the Spotlight event at the Kmart Plaza, Route 132, Hyannis MA. During this 24-hour event, the focus is honoring Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and Gold and Blue Star families. Items will be collected for care packages and monetary donations to cover the cost of shipping. 

The Town of Barnstable’s Annual Memorial Day Parade – Monday, May 27

10:00 AM – The Town of Barnstable’s Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 27, 2019.  The parade will form at 9:30 AM at the Centerville Library and kick off sharply at 10:00 AM and proceed down Main Street to Monument Square for a brief program where there will be the placement of wreaths at monuments for the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars followed by a firing salute by the Yarmouth Minutemen.  The parade will reform and proceed to the Beechwood Cemetery for the main program. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Lt. Colonel Charles D. Carroll, USAFR, Retired.   Lt. Col. Carroll is a retired Command Pilot with over 8,000 flight hours in service to the United States Air Force, The Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard.  In a career spanning over 33 years he has flown fighters and heavies, tankers and transports, and is a graduate of Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff School and Air War College. The public is invited to bring pictures with them to the event of a family member, friend or acquaintance who has passed away and was a veteran.  The parade will not reform but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the Library.

John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee Annual Memorial Day Ceremony – Monday, May 27

12:15 PM – The John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee annual Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at approximately 12:15 PM, Monday, May 27, 2019 at the John F. Kennedy Memorial on Ocean Street (located next to Veterans Beach).  Assisting the John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee will be a group of Cub Scouts from Pack 54, the Barnstable Police Department Honor Guard and other special guests.  This year’s Keynote Speaker will be Barnstable Town Council Vice President John Flores.  It is at this ceremony that the 2019 JFK Memorial Trust Fund Scholarship will be awarded to this year’s recipient, a 2019 Barnstable High School Graduate.  Three finalists are in consideration for the scholarship.  All finalists have incredible academic and extracurricular activity records.  These students are a wonderful tribute to our community and its school system.

Mashpee Community Park and Veterans Garden Ceremony – May 27th

There will be a ceremony sponsored by the Mashpee Memorial DFW Post 5489 and the town of Mashpee Special Events Committee.  The event begins at 10 AM and is located at the Mashpee Community Park and Veterans Garden.

Yarmouth Memorial Day Ceremony – May 27th

The town of Yarmouth’s Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 11 AM in the front lawn at town hall. 

Wellfleet Memorial Day Ceremony – May 27th

The town of Wellfleet’s Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at 8:30 AM in the front of town hall. The ceremony is sponsored by American Legion Post 287.

Sandwich Memorial Day Parade – May 27th

The Sandwich Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 AM at the Hentry T. Wing School.  The parade will see people placing wreaths, with ceremonies afterwards at the Sandwich Library. This parade is put together by the American Legion Post 188.

Provincetown – May 27th

The Provincetown Ceremony will be held at the Doughboy Monument by Town Hall at 11 AM.  

Harwich – May 27th

The Harwich Ceremony will start at 9:40 AM at Brooks Park in Harwich.  The pledge of allegiance will by done by the Harwich scouts, and features music by the Harwich Town Band.

Chatham – May 27th

The Town of Chatham’s event will be held at the Community Center at 10 AM.  Participants this year include the Chatham VFW and American Legion, the Chatham Coast Guard Color Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies.

Brewster – May 27th

The parade will begin at noon on Route 6A.  It will begin at the Brewster Baptist Church and proceed towards the Council on Aging.
