2018 Memorial Day Events on Cape Cod

Memorial Day is a day to remember and pay respects to those who lost their lives fighting for our country. We owe them a great deal of respect and thanks for helping preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Let us not lose the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Operation Flags for Vets – Saturday, May 26
Volunteers will gather Saturday at the Massachusetts National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne to place 77,000 flags on all the graves for Memorial Day.

Operation Flags for Vets will get underway at 10 a.m. with a short ceremony at the flagpole at the end of the cemetery’s Avenue of Flags with the placement of the flags to follow.

14th Annual Troops in the Spotlight Event – May 27 & 28

Cape Cod Cares for the Troops will hold their 14th Annual Troops in the Spotlight event at the Kmart Plaza, Route 132, Hyannis MA. During this 24-hour event, the focus is honoring Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and Gold and Blue Star families. Items will be collected for care packages and monetary donations to cover the cost of shipping. The Opening Ceremony is on Sunday May 27th at 11:30am which will honor all our veterans, including those from WWII, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan; as well as our Gold and Blue Star families.

Kids tent with face painting, arts & crafts, scavenger hunt and more

Orleans Observance of Memorial Day – Monday, May 28
The observance will begin at 10am at the Yacht Club Landing on Town Cove with the Orleans Police and Fire Honor Guards, the American Legion Post 308 and Brewster VFW with a brief service for Coast Guard and the Navy.

There will be a march up from the Cove to Academy Place (across from the Methodist Church) for a continuance of the service for Air Force, Army and Marine Corps. We invite the public to walk with the group from the Cove to Academy place.

At the conclusion of the event, the Methodist Church will open their doors to the Freedom Hall for light snacks. The Orleans Fire Department will be provided snacks as well, including hot dogs.

The Town of Barnstable’s Annual Memorial Day Parade – Monday, May 28
The parade will form at 9:30 am at the Centerville Library and kick off sharply at 10:00 am and proceed down Main Street to Monument Square for a brief program then up Old Stage Road to Beechwood Cemetery for the main program. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Ralph Negron. Lt. Col. Negron is a career Marine Infantry officer with 21 years of service. The public is invited to bring pictures with them to the event of a family member, friend or acquaintance who has passed away and was a veteran. The parade will not reform but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the Library.

John F. Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund Committee Annual Memorial Day Ceremony – Monday, May 28
The ceremony will take place at approximately 12:15 p.m., Monday, May 28th, at the John F. Kennedy Memorial on Ocean Street (located next to Veterans Beach). It is at this ceremony that the 2018 JFK Memorial Trust Fund Scholarship will be awarded to this year’s recipient, a 2018 Barnstable High School Graduate. This year’s scholarship winner of $2,500 is Devin McDonald. All are welcome to attend.

Dennis Memorial Day Observance and Speaking Program – Monday, May 28
The ceremony and speaking program will begin at 10am at Merrill Park, 100 Route 28, West Dennis. In case of inclement weather program will be held at 10:00am at the 1867 West Dennis Graded Schoolhouse, 60 School Street, West Dennis.

Chatham Memorial Day Ceremony – Monday, May 28
The Town of Chatham Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018 in the Community Center and will begin at 10:00.

Sandwich American Legion Post 188 Memorial Day Parade – Monday, May 28

Sandwich will commemorate Memorial Day on Monday May 28, as it has for many years: With a parade, words of remembrance, and wreath laying ceremonies at the town’s war memorials.

The parade is set to begin Monday 10 AM, in front of the Henry T. Wing School. From there, Veterans, Color Guards, Dignitaries, Scout Troops, High School and Elementary School Band members Classic Cars, and Marine Motorcycle Club, will wind their way through Sandwich Village, stopping along the way to place wreaths on several veteran memorials.

After the ceremony, the parade will continue through the village, again stopping at Main Street and Jarvis, to lay a wreath and for the reading of the poem “On Flanders Field”. The parade will continue back to the Wing School

In the event of rain the parade participants will move into the Wing School Auditorium for the ceremony.
