Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for family, friends and feasting. And while you’re awaiting that big feast to be ready, or the meal is over and you’re already slipping into a Tryptophan coma, there are plenty of ways to spend your day with loved ones here on Cape Cod. From high school football games to the annual turkey trot, there is always something to do. Here are a few of our own suggestions:
Chatham Turkey Trot
Meet bright and early Thanksgiving morning for Chatham’s 12th annual Turkey Trot. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the walk/run begins at 8. Registration fee for ages 13 and up: $20 plus a bag of non-perishable grocery items; ages 12 and under: $5 plus two grocery items. Meet in Chatham in the parking lot behind the Chatham Orpheum Theater at the corner of Main Street and Stage Harbor Road. All money and groceries raised by the Chatham Turkey Trot are donated to the Lower Cape Outreach Council.
Barnstable vs. Falmouth
Since 1895, Barnstable High School and Falmouth High School have been part of one of Massachusetts’ longest football rivalries. The annual Thanksgiving Day Game ranks fifth oldest in the state behind Leominster-Fitchburg, Boston English-Boston Latin, Needham-Wellesley and Malden-Medford. Barnstable High School has also engaged Provincetown, Yarmouth, Bourne, Middleboro and Chatham High Schools on Thanksgiving Day. The last time Barnstable played a team other than Falmouth on Thanksgiving Day was in 1943 versus Yarmouth. It’s a traditional sports rivalry in these parts, and a great opportunity for the family to have some fun. Game starts at 10 a.m. at Barnstable High School.
