A Fall Day in Falmouth – Here’s What to do!

Surf Drive Beach

Surf Drive Beach

Falmouth is the southernmost point of the Cape mainland and home to more than 60 miles of beautiful shoreline.  Whether you’re visiting or you live here, I’ve put together my recommendations as to how you could spend your day in this beautiful seaside town.

Beach Breeze INN

Beach Breeze INN

Let’s start with where you want to wake-up… for me if it’s not my own home, it’s the BEACH BREEZE INN.  The Inn is just a wedge shot from Surf Drive Beach and just south of downtown Falmouth.

The Beach Breeze is like being at home.  Every room is custom decorated to be the quintessential Cape style bedroom.  Beautiful pale seaside colors, with well-coordinated cape style furniture makes your stay feel like you’re in your own well… Cape Cod beach house.

7 AM  Stop by the communal kitchen for coffee and pastry then grab you’re walking (or running or biking) gear and head to Surf Drive…go West….walk a mile, or walk two…or join up at the Shining Sea Bike Path and walk all the way to Woods Hole (about 4 miles) and enjoy views of forest, seas and Martha’s Vineyard.  You’ll pass historic Nobska Light too.  You are actually walking much of the route of the famed Falmouth Road Race.  The annual August run actually starts in Woods Hole winding all the way back to Falmouth Harbor and around to Falmouth Heights for the finish line.

Galleries and Classes

Galleries and Classes

9 AM returning to the Beach Breeze, there’s time for a stretch and a shower before heading downtown for a look at what the locals are painting at the Falmouth Arts Center.  This amazing space features galleries but also many classes in a variety of art forms.  After some serious appreciation, you’ll be ready for some shopping.

10AM – Explore the many shops of downtown Falmouth – Falmouth Village on Main Street alone find:

~Celebrations has a wide variety of trinkets and gifts but not as Cape Cod exclusive as other shops.  There are good ideas for most members of the family at affordable prices.

~Twigs is my GO TO store when I need a gift for a friend!  The windows on Main Street beckon with some unique, seasonal and timely gift ideas. Twig’s has unique jewelry, scarves, home décor and artwork among other items in their unique selection with a coastal Cape Cod theme.  I never fail to find that perfect gift at any price, and more often than not, I end up with something for me too!

~Puritan – has their main store in Hyannis and a smaller version with well-known brands and selection that you find in Hyannis.  Wonderful personal attention to shoppers too!

~Caline for Kids is a treasure trove of the cutest clothes for babies and kids.  Wide variety of brands and great selection.  No Grandma can walk out of this place without an amazing gift!

Eight Cousins Books

Eight Cousins Books

~While we’re on the kid’s ideas…check out Eight Cousins Books too!

~Love gadgets and everything Kitchen? Check out LeRoux Kitchen where thousands of items will aid your chef experience!

~High fashion usually found in the city lives at Maxwell & Co. trendy styles for men and women…and they are not shy about the prices!

We’ve just scratched the surface here…so you’ll be back to Falmouth Village soon!

NOON – You’ve passed many great restaurants on Main Street, but we suggest hopping in the car to enjoy one of Falmouth’s best kept secrets because it’s off the beaten path.   Just out of downtown, in the lovely Sippewissett area you’ll find Dana’s Kitchen on Palmer Ave.  Dana and her husband Art have been making delicious breakfasts and lunch for about 15 years.  Everything is fresh and made from the best ingredients.  Soups, Salads and sandwiches along with mouth-watering brisket, corned beef and seafood.   Baked goods include cookies, bars, pies and pastries.  And they cater too!  Appetizers for your next dinner or party whether at home or in your office!

2 PM – Need to rest after lunch?  Take in a new movie at the Falmouth Cinema Pub.  A cool combo of restaurant, bar and movie theatre with comfortable tables and chairs and huge screens that you just don’t find in the newer theatres.

Sports Action

Sports Action

4 PM Falmouth Clippers have some great sports teams and after the movies, take a ride over to the high school or the baseball field behind the police station and find the Clippers facing opponents or practicing soccer, football, field hockey and cross country.

4 PM Would you rather play than watch?  Grab your own special kite from Celebrations downtown and bring it to the Falmouth Kite Park at the end of Falmouth Harbor on the corner of Falmouth Heights Road and Grand Ave.  The winds are always favorable for kite flying and you’ll likely find some friends there doing the same!

La Cucina Sul Mare

La Cucina Sul Mare

6 PM – Now it’s time for some real comfort food and that means La Cucina Sul Mare.  Main street’s convivial and delicious Italian bistro.  Belly up to one of downtown’s best bars where DJ will take your order for a delicious ice cold cocktail or glass of wine from their extensive selection!   You might want to stay right there for dinner or be seated at one of the congenial tables and dive into some of the best Italian food south of the North End. J  I’m a fan of the Caesar Salad and the Shrimp & Scallop Piccatta with angel hair or a simply to-die-for Fettuccine Bolognese.  My husband enjoys the Antipasto, the Linguine & Molto Grande Meatball, the Veal Saltimbocca and the Chicken Parmesan.

A final walk up and down Main Street will entice you to Ben & Bills Chocolate Emporium where all the candy is freshly made.  Recommendations include the Cape Cod dark chocolate bark with nuts and cranberries or any of the Turtles!  They’ve got great ice cream too!

Dancing and Live Bands

Dancing and Live Bands

If dancing is more your method of digestion…Grumpys is a walk or short drive around the corner from downtown Falmouth and there’s great live bands there almost every weekend night.  A very casual and fun place where any age is welcome as long as you have a good attitude!

Luckily, you’re just a short drive back to the Beach Breeze…you’ll need some rest!
