I ran into a friend of mine from the Barnstable Police Department this week. He is a member of the Marine Unit, which is one of the best jobs on the force (as far as I am concerned). We swapped stories about boating adventures around the Cape and the topic of safety for the holiday weekend came up. The BEST viewing spot for any fireworks display is from the water, which means there will be plenty of boats out and about this weekend.
Because so many people will be on the water, we want to take a moment to remind you of a few safety tips:
- The Captain of the boat IS responsible for all persons on the boat.
- Life Jackets for every person on the boat, persons under 12 must ACTUALLY wear life jackets when boat is under way.
- Check to ensure Navigation lighting is working BEFORE getting under way.
- Be extra cautious due the increased number of boaters in the area for event.
- Be observant of new markings (Usually large YELLOW inflated markers) around Fireworks barge area.
- Operator MUST stay away from the adult beverages this evening.
- Do Not overload your boat, check placard to ensure you are not exceeding the allowed number of people on the boat (you will be asked to return to the dock).
- If you encounter a problem, drop your anchor and request help VIA marine radio or cellular phones.
- Set yourself up for an enjoyable evening by ensuring everyone get home safely after Fireworks show.
Special thank you to Barnstable Ptlm John Pass and Ptlm Wayne Ellis for their help with these tips!
