Cape Cod Charity Provides Meal Delivery for those alone on Thanksgiving

For 15 years, the Barnstable Turkey Trot has been delivering meals to senior citizens who will be alone on Thanksgiving Day. Each year 125 meals are prepared lovingly along with floral arrangements to brighten up the table.

“We have been doing this for 15 years now and it is really one of those heart felt programs that everyone loves.  Basically we prepare, cook, assemble and deliver 125 Thanksgiving meals to seniors that are either alone or homebound in the town of Barnstable,” said Claudia Borden Outreach Coordinator Barnstable Senior Services.

Residents across Barnstable who are alone will receive the turkey, vegetables, stuffing, sweet potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and beverages. There’s also a loaf of bread for those all important leftover turkey sandwiches the next day which Borden describes as her “favorite part of Thanksgiving.”

Meals will be delivered on Wednesday November 22 by a team of volunteers who have decorated the bags and put together the meals. Food for the event is provided by Friends of Barnstable Senior Center, Cape Cod Needy Fund, Coca Cola of Cape Cod, the town’s Lombard Fund, Trader Joe’s, and Hyannis Food Service.

Volunteers are needed in order to make this year another success. Flower arrangers are needed on Tuesday November 21. On Wednesday November 22 volunteers are needed to assemble the meals and deliver them to the recipients.

The Barnstable Senior Center is eagerly looking for elderly people who will be on their own this Thanksgiving and would enjoy receiving a meal. Applicants should be over the age of 60 and alone or homebound in the Barnstable area.
