In today’s world, continuing our education is no longer a luxury, but often a necessity. There are many who want to sharpen their skills in their current field, and those who want to do something completely different. No matter what the reason, higher education is continuing to make itself more widely available to those seeking knowledge, and may not be able to afford traditional academics or for whom time is a constraint.
For those re-entering the workforce, or desiring to brush up on their current skills and experience, the question now is, where do you begin?
The Community School at Cape Cod Tech, which is located inside Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, offers adults a wide array of certification and licensing courses in a number of fields, like Veterinary Assisting, Dental Assisting, Cosmetology, Basic and Advanced Carpentry, Culinary Workshops, Medical Assisting, and many other areas of interest.
The mission of the Community School at Cape Cod Tech is to provide job training programs for adults looking to change careers or re-enter the workforce, and to provide the Cape Cod community with evening enrichment courses to help learn new skills or improve on existing ones.
Former student Cathy Corr worked as a medical assistant in Florida for 10 years for a general and vascular surgeon. “I relocated back to my home in Massachusetts in 2007. I worked for the Town of Barnstable, writing parking tickets part-time, seasonally, while trying to get in with the town full-time in a clerical position, but it is very hard to get in,” she said.
Corr also worked as a wheelchair transport person and worked in retail as well. She missed working in the medical and healthcare fields, and made the decision to continue her education while brushing up on her skillset, and enrolled in a program at the Community School at Cape Cod Tech.
“I loved my classes at the tech – the medical assistant course,” Coor said. “We covered a broad range of chapters including anatomy and physiology, vital signs, etc. We practiced performing EKGs, how to give injections, and drawing blood. We learned about every organ and body system.”
While she still works in retail, Corr is currently seeking a medical assistant position. She loved her experience at the school, and highly recommends the course to others.
“Our instructor, Maliqua Gomes, was brilliant, fun, and related her experiences as a nurse to the course study,” Corr said. “We, as students, formed a great comradery. I am currently working on my resume so I can apply for a medical assistant position with a physician.”
