CENTERVILLE – On the occasion of their 80th year in business, Doug and Peggy Warren of Four Seas Ice Cream wanted to put on a major fundraiser for the community.

And so next Sunday, some of the Cape’s top chefs will create 18,000 ice cream-based desserts in a competition that awards bragging rights to the best.

The big winner will be Children’s Cove, a non-profit based in Hyannis that helps children who are victims of violence or abuse.

Peggy Warren said she looked for a charity to serve as the beneficiary and she decided on Children’s Cove.

“Children are so important to me. They are important to our future. Children’s Cove does such an amazing job on advocacy for the children. It was a no-brainer for me,” she said.

As the main event for the fundraiser, Doug had the idea of putting on a dessert contest where the chefs would use Four Seas Ice Cream as a base for their creations.

As part of the contest rules, chefs could suggest that Four Seas create a special flavor for the chef and others have chosen one of the shop’s standard flavors.

From there, the idea expanded to include more food, live  music by the Bart Weisman Jazz Trio and children’s activities. There will also be a silent auction and raffles. Cape Cod Package Store will be on hand with dessert wine tastings and Cape Cod Beer will hold a beer tasting.

Four Seas will hold a tasting of their honey Jack Daniels ice cream.

As for children’s activities, on hand will be Michael’s staff with crafts, face-painting, balloon animals, wood airplanes for the children, a bouncy house, an antique fire truck and Sheriff’s junior badges.

The event, Cape Cod Coolest Dessert Contest, takes place Sunday, August 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on Route 28 in Centerville.

The venue at the church has the advantage of indoor and outdoor space for the event, Peggy said.

The entrance fee for the event is $15 for adults, $10 for children 10 and under and those 5 and under are free. Admission to the event includes a ballot that allows the bearer to taste all 18 desserts or as many as they want.

The winner of the contest, the Golden Scoop Award, will be announced on WQRC 99.9 the next day. There will also be an award for the coolest decorated chef’s booth.

The restaurants that have signed up to participate in the challenge are the Roadhouse Cafe, Red’s Restaurant at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel, Centerville Pie Company, Idgy’s Gluten Free Restaurant, The Island Merchant, Yarmouth House Restaurant, DiParma Italian Table, Pain D’Avignon Cafe Boulangerie, Little Miss Cupcape, Williams-Sonoma, Alan Zox of Zox Kitchen, the Compound Restaurant, Il Maestro Ristorante, Lambert’s Rainbow Fruit in Centerville, the Captain David Kelley House, Amari Restaurant, and Torino’s Restaurant and Bar.

For Peggy, organizing the event has been a major project and she said she is looking forward to the day of the contest–a chance to celebrate desserts and the advocacy work of Children’s Cove.
