Harwich Cranberry Festival: What You Need To Know

Cape Cod’s first business is tourism. But the Cape has a second business — cranberries.

With the tourism season slowing down, it’s about time that we spend a moment or two celebrating those berries, the hard-working folk who grow them, and the fine Americans who consume them and pump a bit of dough into an economy.

Enter the Harwich Cranberry Festival, technically the Harwich Cranberry Arts and Music Festival, and it’s stated mission is to provide events which entertain the public, sustain artists and musicians, provide voice to community organizations, and raise funds to support our youth. But mostly it’s about cranberries.

The two-day event to take place this Saturday and Sunday will be held behind the Harwich Community Center on Oak Street. In the field on Saturday there will be roughly 150 different vendors selling handmade craft items, a great many of them berry related.

There will also be art, pottery, baked goods, quilts, cutlery, henna tattoos, books, clothing, jewelry, flowers, and luggage.

“It’s great when the different towns and such can have festivals or big events to elongate that season,” said Cyndi Williams, the interim executive director of the Harwich Chamber of Commerce.

All that shopping is bound to make you hungry and one cannot live on cranberries alone (though they are delicious and very good for you) and so event organizers have got through the trouble of inviting a great many food trucks.

Trolley Dogs, Dennis Public Market, Salt Block, Chocolate Cafe, Big Squeeze, and Lewis Brother’s Ice Cream will all be represented for you culinary enjoyment.

What’s more, there will be fireworks. After more than a decade in business the festival added the fireworks show last year and it is set to return, adding yet another element of excitement to the family-friendly extravaganza. And it’s all free too. Admission, parking, the whole deal.

There’s music too. The aptly named CranJam will take place both Saturday and Sunday featuring Grammy-winners Los Texmaniacs in their festival debut, as well as Chandler Travis Three-O with special guest Kami Lyle and Donna the Buffalo.

That’s free too. And whilst enjoying the tunes, beer and wine will be available as well.

Best of all, when all is said and done the event serves the public good. Last year, the event raised enough funds to award fifteen $1,000 scholarships to local students headed to college.

“It’s a big thing for Harwich and we’re really excited to be a part of it,” Williams said, “It’s great when the different towns and such can have festivals or big events to elongate that season.”
