Hello, My Name Is: Timothy Whelan

Welcome to our new feature, “Hello My Name Is…”. In the coming weeks we will have the opportunity to spend a little time getting to know people in our community. As you know, the best way to learn about someone is to ask questions. In this series we ask ten questions to different individuals so that we can know more about the folks who live with us here on Cape Cod.

Hello, My Name Is Timothy Whelan

Occupation: State Representative, First Barnstable District (Ret. Massachusetts State Police)

What was your first paying job?

I had a paper route from ages 10 thru 14, and then my first hourly wage job was bagging groceries at the “Big Discount” supermarket on Mill Street in Worcester.

When was the last time you laughed really hard?

I recently went out for dinner with a couple of friends I worked with years ago on the State Police.  I laughed like I hadn’t laughed in some time.  We all needed that.

Did you grow up on the Cape? If not, where did you grow up and why did you come to the Cape?

I grew up in the City of Worcester.  My family and I moved here in 2007, locating in Brewster, when my wife took a job as an elementary school principal in the D-Y school district.

Where is your ‘go-to’ spot for a cup of chowder?

To see my good friend Gerry Manning at Captain Parker’s.  Of course.

Do you have a favorite non-profit group here on the Cape?

Tough question because we have so many awesome non-profits in our community doing great things.  From Independence House to Cape Cod Cares for the Troops.  From the Our Lady of the Cape Christmas Dinner to Cape Cod Veterans, Inc.  We have great charities in the arts, education, housing, and more.  The greatness of the folks in our community shines through in their support of these fantastic charities.

What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most?

I’m a runner.  I’ve finished four marathons, believe it or not.  I also lift weights a lot, but nothing surprises people more than seeing all 270 pounds of me out running road races across the Cape.

In a parallel universe, what would you be doing?

This will sound corny but I’d be doing exactly what I am doing now.  Public service.  God has been exceedingly kind to me with family, friends, and careers.  There is nothing I want more than to just be really good at what I’m doing right now.

What person had the greatest influence on you and why?

My awesome wife, Lisa..  We first met and started dating in high school, she was 15 and I was 16 and married six years later.  This year will be 29 years married and God blessed us with two fantastic daughters, Katie and Maggie.

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I see?

Organic produce.  Proteins.  Pretty boring stuff that my very health-conscious wife keeps in stock.

If you could go out on a boat fishing for a day, who would you bring?

My Mom and Dad.  Both of them.  Mom has been gone almost 20 years and Dad 13 years.  I miss them so much every day.
