Merging Technology to Bring the Family Together

As much as I enjoy many of modern technology’s conveniences, there are times when sitting around a camp fire in a wifi-free area is a delight unto itself. Absent are the chirps & chimes from incoming emails, Likes, Tweets, Snaps, texts, etc… And the rich sounds of face-to-face conversations and laughter far outweigh the LOLs and smiley faces.

When my son comes to visit, he now has more devices connecting to our wifi than I do. It’s not a competition, but I can’t help but remember being his age and having a Schwinn and a set of walkie-talkies. How times have changed… However, I do understand the complexities of navigating Middle School where smart-phones and social media are the norm. But sometimes it makes me wonder if we’ll grow apart as I cling to the past and he embraces the future.

One thing we bond over is video games. Obviously, we come from different eras – he began with Nintendo’s Wii and I had an Atari 2600 when I was about his age. Naturally, he likes LEGO Batman and I drift toward Missile Command and Pac-Man, but the camaraderie we find in gaming is truly a gift. We have head-to-head battles on my old Atari and then switch to his Nintendo Wii U.
I’ve encountered many parents who still love video games and want to share that passion with their kids. The problem many parents face is their love for an out-dated Atari or Nintendo console when kids want the photo-realism of a PS4. Is there a common ground with those pixelated 8-bit games?

This holiday season, I see a great opportunity for parents to game with their kids in a wonderful melding of vintage video games, new technologies, and making old games seem new again!
Do your kids have a PlayStation 4 and now want a PS4 Pro for the holidays? Were you thinking of surprising the family with a 4K television this year? Did you know you could buy both AND play Missile Command on this fabulous new setup? I told you there was a great opportunity coming this holiday season!

Sony is breaking the rules and releasing the PS4 Pro alongside their existing console. While the new model is primarily to support their upcoming virtual reality games, it supports 4K resolution, HDR (High Dynamic Range) and smoother frame rates. This goes hand-in-hand with the 4K TV you’ve been eyeing. And those of you who grew up in my gaming era will be delighted with the 2 games being released this Fall from Atari!

Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1 and Volume 2 feature a slew of classic Atari home console titles and arcade games. Each of the two volumes, being released for PS4 and Xbox One, contains fifty games – including Missile Command on Vol. 1 🙂

A nice facet of these Atari releases is in the packaging. Most classic games are now relegated to mobile platforms or downloads from Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft online stores. Atari’s physical release gives the games a lot of validation, as they will be on retail shelves next to all the AAA titles. You’ll be able to wrap them up and put them next to that new TV with a big bow on top!

If you love classic games from the 1980s, this is a great opportunity to share them with your kids on their state-of-the-art game console.
