If you’re aching to have a beautiful garden in the spring time, now is the time to get buys.
Horticulturist Jeanie Gillis of Pine Tree Nursery has your homework sheet for the month of September:
The air is cool; the sky is blue, time to get back to planting!
· Bulbs are easy: Dig Drop Done! Daffodils are the most pest resistant, Tulips are the most romantic and Giant Alliums are the statement makers.
· Dig a hole: approximately 3 times the size of bulb.
· Place bulbs in hole, pointy side up.
· Cover with soil.
For adding wow to you garden pick the most visible spot and fill with bulbs; entry door, driveway entrance, or the view from the kitchen window.
If adding bulbs over the time and you can’t remember where they are; dig a trench load up with bulbs, then after they bloom next spring, transplant to the bare bulbs spots in your garden.
· Now is a great time to fertilize, reseed and aerate your lawn.
· Continue deadheading and pruning your annuals as here on the Cape they will bloom right through fall.
· Harvest your herbs and dry them in the microwave… short settings on high.
· Use your phone to take lots of pictures of your successes so you can repeat next year.
· If you are a foodie stop in to Pine Tree Nursery to pick up a Crocus sativus bulb and grow your own saffron.
