OPAK Is Launching Its First Summer Program

The ocean comprises 99% of the habitable space on Earth and yet we have only explored about 5% of it. Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids, Inc. (OPAK) wants to open up the un-explored 95% by getting kids to become curious about their local environments.

All of our actions, as humans, directly impact the oceans in some way.

However, we, as humans, seldom look into this fact.

OPAK is striving to get students to be interested in protecting the oceans by advocating for their local ecosystems. For example, on Cape Cod we want kids to be aware of their watersheds and the local estuaries that they impact. OPAK teaches the need to protect our oceans through a science-based education that simultaneously stresses the need for a strong background in advocacy taught through the arts.

We get kids to be hands on learners through experiments in the field and by creating music and art in the classroom. Music and the arts are natural ways for children to express themselves which provides a strong foundation for environmental advocacy. We strongly believe that all students should have the great fortune to enjoy and then advocate for nature because everyone has the ability to speak up for their environment, no matter their background!

Last summer our directors were part of The Global Warming Express Program at Pleasant Bay Community Boating and they got to see first-hand that not all of the Cape Community is aware of the challenges the Cape environment faces.

We know that the OPAK mission can get kids to change this by providing them the tools to stand up and protect the ocean! The summer 2017 program will be from July 17th-August 11th(Monday-Friday) from 9am-2:30pm at the Old Harwich Middle School.

Each week will have its own theme based on a marine topic and will include at least two field trips, as well as, talks from local scientists. The week’s themes are: Water Quality and Plankton, Estuaries and Crustaceans, Marine Megafauna, and Marine Debris and Clean Energy.

Please visit our website: www.opakedu.org/programsfor details on what will be covered during each week! Spots are filling fast, so please sign up quickly if you are interested. For any questions, please contact Jeffrey Morgan at [email protected].
