Operation: Flags For Vets 2017

Picture 22 of 22

It was a picture perfect crisp fall morning with hundreds of people, from every generation, coming together to pay respect and show their patriotism at the National Cemetery in Bourne. Under the instruction of Gold Star Father Paul Monti, in the name of his late son  Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti, the semi-annual event has become a tradition for many people. A brief opening ceremony included the Pledge of Allegiance led by local  Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, The Star Spangled Banner, an inspirational prayer about hope and the reciting of the poem “We Remember”.  Following the opening ceremony, flags were respectfully placed at each of the 70,000 graves, filling the fields and hillsides with waves of red white and blue.

Unlike past years, because Veteran’s Day falls on a Saturday (November 11), the flags will remain in place for two weeks rather than one. During that time, I urge you to take the time to visit the National Cemetery and reflect on those who have dedicated their lives for our freedom both living and departed.

On Sunday November 19th, the public is invited to help with the careful removal of flags for safe storage for the next ceremony.
