Places to Golf During Memorial Day Weekend

Golfing is a staple summertime activity here on Cape Cod, and there’s no shortage of options for those eager eagle seekers.

Activity on golf courses on the Cape will reach fever pitch over the next few weeks, and it all starts this weekend surrounding Memorial Day.

If you’re thinking about getting some green time in this weekend, try one of these popular courses, each with their own character:

The Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds, Marstons Mills
Regularly voted by golfers around New England as a “Top 25 Public Place to Play,” the course was formerly the home of the Barnstable County Fair. Golf Adviser said the course “remains true to the philosophy of the late Geoffrey Cornish, who believed a golfer should feel better after playing regardless of his or her score.”

Dennis Pines, East Dennis
One of two courses owned by the town of Dennis and at 7,000 yards, Dennis Pines is one of the longest courses on the Cape. Designed by Henry C. Mitchell, the Pines features narrow, tree-lined holes and fairways that follow the natural terrain. Hackers can take solace in the fact that the Pines has four sets of tees to accommodate all skill levels. Sunday is 3 for 4 greens fees!

Highland Links, Truro
This one’s a bit more of a challenge. The Cape’s oldest golf course and one of the most scenic, this nine-holer is one of just two in the country that can be classified as a links layout.

Perched high along windswept bluffs overlooking the Atlantic next to the vintage Cape Cod Light, the course features deep natural rough, Scotch broom, heath, non-irrigated open fairways, and spectacular ocean views. Bring a lot of balls because you’ll lose them in the thick mass of thorny shrubs that flank every fairway.

The Captains Golf Course, Brewster
The Captains Golf Course bills itself the “golf capital of the Lower Cape.” The Port course plays more difficult than the Starboard with two kettle ponds guarding the eighth and 14th greens. The Starboard, featuring long fairways and fast greens, is a little more forgiving.

Cape Cod Country Club, East Falmouth
On the edge of Coonamessett Pond in Falmouth, this fun 18-hole course offers what many call “the classic Cape Cod golf experience.” Opened in 1928 as the Coonamessett golf course, it features 6,404 yards of golf from the longest tees.

The Brookside Club, Bourne
Why go too far over the Bridges? The Brookside Club offers a public golf course with a private club atmosphere. There are many reasons to play golf on Cape Cod this summer, but at Brookside, part of the reason is the food! Dine at the Sunset Grille at the Brookside Club after playing 18 holes.

Twin Brooks, Hyannis
A great family course, Twin Brooks is centrally-located in the heart of Hyannis. Expect about 2-3 hours of solid play time and lovely views of well-manicured grounds.
