Summer Bucket List: Catch a Cape Cod Baseball League Game

Welcome to CapeCod.com’s Summer Bucket List series, brought to you by the good folks at Cape Cod Calling. Each week, we will bring you a new idea for you to enjoy your summer here on Cape Cod.

Cooperstown, New York might be home to the Baseball Hall of Fame, but Cape Cod is where the legends started out!

If you are a fan of baseball in any degree, you must take in one of the many Cape Cod Baseball League games during the summer. For 9 weeks, from June until the playoffs in August, the best college baseball athletes compete in the league that launched the careers of many greats! According to the Cape Cod Baseball League website, current MLB alumni include New York Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury(Falmouth 2004), Boston Red Sox’s Chris Sale (Yarmouth-Dennis 2009), Chicago Cub’s Ian Happ (Harwich 2013-2014) and Kris Bryant (Chatham 2011), Colorado Rockies Chad Bettis (Falmouth 2008) and many more.

In fact, at one point, 1 in 7 Major League players were Cape Cod Baseball League alumni!

Did you know that when the Red Sox played the Dodgers in the World Series last season, 14 of the players between the teams were previously in the Cape League?

Red Sox- 2018 MLB American League Champions

Matt Barnes – Wareham
Joe Kelly – Yarmouth – Dennis
Chris Sale – Yarmouth – Dennis
Brandon Workman – Wareham
Mitch Moreland – Bourne
Steve Pearce – Cotuit
Jackie Bradley Jr. – Hyannis

Dodgers – 2018 MLB National League Champions

Walker Buehler – Yarmouth-Dennis
Dylan Floro – Hyannis

Rich Hill – Chatham

Yasmani Grandal – Brewster
Max Muncy – Wareham
Chris Taylor – Yarmouth-Dennis
Justin Turner – Yarmouth-Dennis

What Does it Cost and should we bring the kids?

The games are all free but bring a few dollars for the “pass-the-hat” collections. The Cape Cod Baseball League is a non-profit organization.

The games are perfect for kids.  Bring a glove as your chances of catching a foul ball are significantly higher than if you were at many other baseball games.

What to Bring and When to Get There

You’ll want to make sure to arrive early to many of the fields as parking is generally very limited.  For instance, the Kettleers in Cotuit have a small parking lot which results in people parking a walk away.

Bring your glove, some food and a chair and you’ll enjoy the best of what the Cape Cod Baseball League has to offer.

Teams and Schedule

There are ten teams total in the league, representing Brewster, Bourne, Cotuit, Chatham, Wareham, Yarmouth-Dennis, Falmouth, Hyannis, Harwich and Orleans.

The All-Star game this season will be held on July 21st at Eldredge Park in Orleans at 6 PM.
