The Community School at Cape Cod Tech, which is located inside Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, offers adults a wide array of continuing-education certification and licensing courses in a number of fields, like Veterinary Assisting, Dental Assisting, Cosmetology, Basic and Advanced Carpentry, Culinary Workshops, Medical Assisting and many other areas of interest.
The mission of the Community School at Cape Cod Tech is to provide job training programs for adults looking to change careers or re-enter the workforce, and to provide the Cape Cod community with evening enrichment courses to help learn new skills or improve on existing ones. Anastasiya Wiggins, a recent alumnus of the school, was ready to try something completely new in her life.
“I have two small children, so for the last five years I devoted my time exclusively to their education and development,” she said. “Every mother dreams that her children are always healthy – that’s how I became interested in medicine, in general, and one of the most important roles in our health is the health of the oral cavity. Also, it’s always pleasant to see a person with a beautiful sparkling smile! That’s why, as a first step in my continuing education, I decided to try myself as a dental assistant. I think it’s very interesting, and always to strive to learn more.”
Before she had her children, Wiggins studied at Minsk State Linguistic University, in Belarus, specializing in foreign policy relations. But after a while, she became interested in trying something completely new and different.
“I learned that there is a program in the Community School at Cape Cod Tech, which prepares dental assistants. It is required to have a high school diploma and a strong desire to learn and succeed to be able to apply for the program,” she said.
Wiggins was impressed with her experience at the school. “From the first class, I saw the professionalism of the instructors. Theoretical and practical classes were thought out in a very accessible and interesting form. And all the experience I received was very useful for my current work. In addition to the program material, we were also provided with a lot of additional material to read and learn.
“Ms. Reilly-O’Brien has extensive work experience and she skillfully passed it to us during the classes,” Wiggins continued. “She was able to find an approach to each of us, and guide us through the learning process. Ms. Holmes gave us a lot of theoretical knowledge and clinical experience. Oftentimes, she paid extra attention to individual work with each student, to make us feel confident in the material and practical skills.”
The knowledge Wiggins gained from the program allows her to practically apply them in her current work as a dental assistant. “Studying at Community School fully met my expectations. Thanks to this program, I work with a remarkable team in the pediatric dental office of Dr. Seth Latimer, and I apply my received knowledge in practice. I can highly recommend Dental Assistant program to those who want to see themselves in this direction of dentistry.”
She added that, having learned what she did at the Community School at Cape Cod Tech, Wiggins began to pay even more attention to the oral health of herself and her family.
