Summer may be coming to an end, but it’s not too late to spend that awesome summer weekend on Cape Cod! With fewer tourists on the Cape, you can enjoy less traffic – and less frustration. This coming weekend holds plenty of adventure for those who haven’t had a chance to get to the Cape this summer, just want to squeeze in one more amazing weekend, and for locals who can now come out and play!
Hit the sand!
The summer crowds have thinned substantially, so now is a great time to take advantage of the still-beautiful weather and hit those beaches. With 559.6 miles of unspoiled coastline, Cape Cod offers lots of sandy stretches for you to enjoy. Relax on a chair, walk the shoreline, swim in the water. Bring your metal detector, and do some treasure hunting. And now that the height of tourist season is over, bring your dog! The Cape Cod National Seashore is 40 miles long that beckon to be explored.
Hit the islands!
Ferry and tour services are still operating, not only heading out to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, but there are also Monomoy Island excursions, Barnstable Harbor ECO tours, tours of Chatham Harbor, Nantucket Sound, fishing trips and more!
Hit the shops!
Many of the shops in towns across the Cape are beginning to mark down their wares, particularly the seasonal summer gifts and gear, so great deals can be had. Spend a day walking the charming streets of Sandwich, Woods Hole, Wellfleet Provincetown and Hyannis. All of the Cape’s beautiful downtown areas have great places to eat and drink, too!
Catch a live performance!
Cape Cod offers some of the best talent in the area, and its many live shows are not to be missed. Check out the schedules for The Cape Cod Theatre Project in Falmouth, The Academy Playhouse in Orleans, The Provincetown Theatre, or The Cape Cod Theater Company in Harwich. Discover the freebies!
There are many free, fun activities to take advantage of on the Cape. Take a tour of the Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis; check out Woods Hole Science Aquarium, which houses more than 140 species of marine life; stroll through Cape Cod Lavender Farm in Harwich; tour the Cape Cod Chips factory in Hyannis; enjoy free music and entertainment at the Orleans Farmers Market; or bike the 5.25-mile Province Lands Trail in Provincetown.
Go whale watching!
Locals may not normally consider going on a whale watch themselves since it’s a big “touristy” thing to do. But right now is a great time to get out there yourself. The whales hanging out at Stellwagon Bank are appearing in unusual numbers. This could be an adventure to remember!
Take a hike!
The Cape never runs short on scenic and unusual places to enjoy the gifts of nature while walking or hiking. Atlantic White Cedars Swamp in Wellfleet is hauntingly beautiful in the offseason and has a boardwalk that weaves through the swamp. Indian Lands Conservation Area in Dennis can be a long, scenic walk, and allows dogs on the trail (as long they’re leashed). Salt Pond Bird Sanctuary in Falmouth offers plenty of trails for visitors to stroll along and, as indicated by the name, birdwatchers can come and try to identify the various species that populate the area.
