The MSPCA Walk for Animals this past Saturday brought out four-legged, furry friends and their families from all over the Cape. The annual event, which raises much-needed funds for the Cape Cod MSPCA, offered all kinds of fun for pets and their humans alike, including ice cream and food trucks, photo booths, face painting, contests like Best Trick and Owner Lookalike, loads of prizes, and even a K-9 demonstration from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Team.

Pet owners, animal rescue volunteers, animal lovers and businesses from across the Cape came together Aselton Park, in Hyannis, to make this event a huge success. This year’s walk helped to raise over $52,000 for the Cape Cod MSPCA.

Speaking of contests, the competition was fierce for CCB Media’s Cutest Pet Contest, which offered a $1,000 gift certificate to Hyannis Country Garden. Cute canines of all shapes, sizes and breeds competed for the top prize, which ultimately went to a beautiful, smiling pit bull named Dutchess and her human, Laurel Ryan, from Wellfleet.  (To view the top 10 photographs as voted by CapeCod.com readers, click here.)

Laurel’s boyfriend, Andy Young, who was serving in the Army and stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY, had seen an ad for a female pit bull on Craigslist from a breeder in Indiana. He found out that Dutchess’ owner was unable to care for her any longer and had returned her to the breeder. He made the drive to Indiana and welcomed this playful pup into a loving forever home.

In an act of generosity, Laurel decided to take that $1,000 gift certificate and use it to make the lives of other animals a little better. “Lord knows our dog gets spoiled enough,” she said. “We’d rather give it back. We went to Hyannis Country Garden that same day and spent $700 on toys and treats, and the remaining $300 went to food, all donated to Brewster Animal Rescue.”  Her donation will greatly benefit the lives of many homeless animals at the shelter.

Many thanks to Hyannis Country Garden for their generosity, and to all who came out to participate in this wonderful event. See you next year!
