Tips for Staying Safe During Hurricane Season

It has been a long time since Cape Cod was affected by a hurricane. This is a gentle reminder that hurricane season is here and we need to be ready.

A hurricane can be not only damaging, but potentially deadly. Your home could be damaged or destroyed by many of the hazards that come with this type of storm.

For example:

Trees can topple and bring with them power lines

Debris that is caught up in the winds can not only break windows and doors, but then those openings allow high winds and rain into the home

A coastal surge can flood basements and lower levels of the home.

In many cases your home is your most valuable asset. The costs that come from damage from a hurricane as well as the disruption to your life can be huge.

Being prepared is your best defense against a hurricane.  Fair Insurance has been in business on Cape Cod since 1987. They were serving Cape Cod during Hurricane Bob and saw the damage first hand. Here are their tips on being prepared for a hurricane.

Have an emergency plan

Have emergency numbers available in your smart phone as well as important contact information

Know how and when to turn off water, gas and electricity

Choose a friend in another state as your family’s point of contact for everyone to call if the family gets separated

Build a kit

Store these items in a back pack or duffle bag. Keep documents in a waterproof bag

  • Battery powered radio
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Cell phone charges
  • First aid kit
  • Prescriptions

If a storm threatens:
