BOSTON (AP) — The voice flowing from the radios of tens of thousands of Boston-area drivers during the morning commute was the same.
But the name was different.
WBZ-AM traffic reporter Scott Eck, who grew up in Barnstable, signed off for the first time today as Kristen Eck, a public step toward her transition.
Eck says she knew at the age of 5 she was supposed to be a girl.
“Something that was just deep within me told me, a feeling if you will, that I was not in the right body, that what I had for a body didn’t match what was in my soul,” she told the Boston Herald. “Something was different from the other children.”
The years of “inner turmoil” affected her health.
Eck told the Herald she went to a doctor for a check-up and did some soul-searching.
“Why are you treating yourself this badly? It was because I didn’t like myself. I had been running away from myself,” Eck said.
She decided it was time to make the transition.
Eck has been undergoing hormone therapy and plans to have sex reassignment surgery in a year.
She says her colleagues at the station have been unflinchingly supportive.
“That was amazing,” she said, “to be able to use my name on air.”
