What’s Happening on Cape Cod This Week

It seems like the busiest weekend of the summer! From the Falmouth Road Race to the Provincetown Carnival celebrations, and everything in between! If you are looking for things to do this weekend, we have you covered from one end of the Cape to the other! 

Carnival Week, Thurs 8/15 – Sun 8/25, Provincetown

The theme this year is The Enchanted Forest. Highlights include the welcome party at the Crown & Anchor on Thursday night the 15th, the Gallery Stroll on Friday evening, the costume ball on Sunday night and the parade to end all parades on Thursday the 22nd. Details on the schedule at ptown.org.

15th Provincetown Jazz Festival, Thurs, 8/15 and Mon, 8/19

Mosquito Story Slam, Thurs, 8/15, 5:30, Salt Pond Visitor Center

This is a live storytelling event and podcast now in its 6th season on the Outer Cape. Storytellers will have five minutes to tell a true story based on the theme, Mother Nature. Sign up at 5:30, stories begin at 6. No pre-registration required – and it’s a free event. Bring bug spray! 

48th Festival of the Arts, Fri, 8/16 – Sun, 8/18, Chase Park, Chatham

Over 120 exhibitors from around the country will showcase clothing, jewelry, fine woodworking, art, ceramics, graphics, metalwork, glass and much more. Enjoy food trucks and an ice cream van, along with the childrens’ tent. Shuttles will run from Main St. throughout.

Jason Spooner in Concert, Fri, 8/16, 5PM, Mashpee Commons

Portland, Maine based songwriter, guitarist and producer Jason Spooner has been a visible and respected presence on the northeastern and national live music circuits for close to two decades.  His quartet stands out with a signature sound that appeals to a wide range of audiences, seamlessly blending a variety of musical influences including roots rock, americana, blues, folk and jazz with undercurrents of reggae and soul. The show is free and open to the public. Beer/Wine garden, (cash bar) Tripping Lily opening, 5pm, Jason Spooner goes on @ 6:30pm 

Against the Tide Cape Cod, Sat, 8/17, 7 AM, Nickerson State Park

This is a family-friendly, multi-sport event to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Participants may compete in one or more events, including a competitive 1-mile swim, an Aquathon (the 1-mile swim followed by a 5K or 10K run), a 3-mile walk, a 1/2 Mile Stand-up Paddle Board course, and more. Chalk Full Of Fun Street Painting Fest, Sat, 8/17, 9 AM, Onset (Bandshell on Union Ave)

Express yourself with chalk art at this fun family festival! $5 registration fee includes supplies. Registration begins at 9:00 – come early for the best spots. There’s also live music planned and a vendor and craft fair. Rain date Sunday. onsetbay.org

Honey Bee Day, Sat, 8/17, 9:30 AM, CC Museum of Natural History

Join the CCMNH Bee Team for fun activities as they teach you about the importance of honeybees. Learn all about beekeeping; the hierarchy among workers, drones and the queen; pollination; and bee products such as honey and beeswax. There’ll be a documentary in the theater room all day, and even some bee crafts – plus, for an extra small fee, you can watch 2 live beehive openings at 12 and 12:45. Register at ccmnh.org.

6th Children’s LEGO Home Building Competition, Sat, 8/17, 10 AM, Johnny Kelley Rec Center

All contestants will have 1 hour to build their dream home (tables, chairs, and Legos provided.) Parents/ guardians will not be permitted within the building area. Judging will be performed by community leaders and industry professionals. There’ll be a corn hole competition for parents and siblings while the build is taking place, and Mom & Pops “Food Truck” will provide lunch. Barnstable Village Day, Sat, 8/17, 10 AM, Rt. 149 (Community Building, Fire Station, etc.)

A community celebration for all ages! Enjoy kids’ activities, antique cars, food, a fire station open house, and more. Check the full schedule at westbarnstable.org. Rain date is Sunday.

New Balance Falmouth Road Race, Sun, 8/18, 9 AM
