OSTERVILLE – The Osterville Historical Museum opened for the season on Thursday and is celebrating 85 years.

The museum features an 1820s coastal schooner captain’s home which is the oldest in Osterville and the largest collection of wooden boats in Massachusetts.

This year the museum will display never-before-seen archival images from the Seapuit Club.

The exhibit includes the original sign from the golf course and an oil lamp from the desk where guests registered for their stay.

The Seapuit Club and golf course spanned 1,000 acres in Osterville and Marstons Mills and is said to be the second oldest in the country, opening in 1898.

The museum has also expanded its “Osterville Remembers: World War II” exhibit.

A Horizon Foundation grant was awarded to the museum this month which will be used for phase two of its Charting the Course Initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to bring more technology into the existing boat shops including redesigned viewing stations and exhibit panels including oral histories and other digital archives.

The museum on West Bay Road is open Thrusday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through September 16 and is home to the Osterville Farmers Market each Friday starting June 24.

Admission is free and parking is available. For more information and a full calendar of events visit ostervillemuseum.org.
