Whydah Museum in Yarmuoth Welcomes 100,000th Visitor

WEST YARMOUTH – The Whydah Pirate Museum has welcomed its 100,000th visitor.

The facility has become a staple attraction to Cape Cod locals and tourists since it opened a year and half ago.

The Whydah was a slave ship that sailed in the early 18th century. It was captured by pirates who then seized 53 other vessels and their treasures after making it their flagship.

The Whydah sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717. Most of the 147-man crew drowned.

In 1985, the ship’s bell was discovered, followed by countless artifacts being found and preserved. It is the world’s only confirmed pirate shipwreck with its treasure intact.

Visitors can touch some of the treasure and speak with archaeologists who are preserving the ship’s remains.

The museum is located on Rt. 28 in West Yarmouth.
