12th Annual Thanksgiving Baskets for Cape Codders Collects Donations

BARNSTABLE – The Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and the Islands hosted their annual Thanksgiving Baskets for Cape Codders collection Saturday.

Each of the past 12 years the organization relies on members of the community to collect hundreds of baskets to make the holidays more special for local families in need.

“The whole meal is in a box,” said Judy Walden Scarafile, one of the co-chairs of the event, “and sometimes, I’ll tell you honestly, it doesn’t fit in one box. We have to put ‘box one of two’, ‘box two of two’ and try to tape them together. People are so generous.”

The event comes together thanks to significant help from local businesses and community organizations including Saint Mary’s, the Centerville Civic Association, and the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Dozens of participants loaded Saint Mary’s Church in Barnstable with potatoes, carrots, squash, stuffing, cranberry sauce, frozen turkeys, and countless more donations with the aim of outperforming last year’s collection which provided 215 holiday meals.

Each donation box is topped off with a quart of ice cream courtesy of Cape Cod Creamery.

“People are very, very generous at this time of year.” said Scarafile.

“And why does it have to end January 1st, why can’t we be like this all the time. I mean, it’s all about love and it’s all about caring for one another and if we did this 12 months a year wouldn’t the world be better?”

The collection continued Sunday morning at Saint Mary’s Church on Route 6A. Distribution will take place later this week.
