13-Day Mulch Fire will Cost Town of Falmouth

fire department patchFALMOUTH – The Falmouth Fire Department has officially extinguished the fire at Blacksmith Shop Farms in Hatchville, nearly two weeks after the fire started. But the cost in water, equipment and man hours is still being calculated.

Falmouth Deputy Fire Chief Michael Small said that about 5 million gallons of water was used to fight the fire.

Small said that after a day of fighting the fire, officials believed they had put out the blaze but it continued to flare over the next 13 days.

The fire flared up again last week but was handled by the property owner with equipment loaned by the fire department.
