174th Barnstable County Fair to Open in East Falmouth

EAST FALMOUTH – The 174th edition of the Barnstable County Fair opens today at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth.

The fair includes food, attractions, midway rides, agricultural exhibits and several musical acts through Sunday.

Highlights this year include the World’s Largest Demolition Derby, the kid’s demolition derby and main stage musical performances from Jordan Davis, Jenny Tolman and the Romantics.

Fair Manager Wendy Brown says they aim to have something for everyone when it comes to music.

“I think we’ve accomplished very nicely this year with brand new country, older acts from the 60s and 70s and introducing more of the 80s acts this year with the Romantics which I think is exciting,” Brown said.

Brown said the agriculture exhibits are also an important part of the fair and that youth participation this year was high.

“I think kids have lost touch sometimes with agriculture, which is important to us,” Brown said. “We are all involved in agriculture one way or another so it is a great learning experience for them.”

The fair’s scholarship program will award $40,000 in scholarships to local students this year.

All of the scholarships will be awarded to more than a dozen students on Thursday night before the Romantics take to the main stage.

The Barnstable County Agricultural Society held the first fair in 1844 at the County Courthouse in Barnstable Village.

After a short stint in Marstons Mills the fair was moved to its current location in 1973.

The fair continues the traditional agricultural heritage of the region with juried agriculture and livestock exhibits, 4-H programs and a petting zoo.

“You’ll see tons of different animals throughout the week, including sheep and cattle and mini horses and this year we have a Serama chicken,” Brown said. “It’s a teacup chicken.”

Ground attractions at the fair also include the Beer Garden, iFlip Acrobatics, Tim Tegge and The Aristov Troupe, the HKS Clydesdales and more.

Admission to the fair remains $12 and includes all shows. The gates are open from 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, along with noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
