FigawiHYANNIS – The 45th annual Figawi Race Weekend kicks off Friday.

Entries include sailors from several states, over 240 boats and over 3,000 sailors and visitors attend the event.

The boats are placed into 13 divisions and compete across Nantucket Sound in various courses, to be the first one to reach Nantucket.

A parade of sailboats head out of Lewis Bay around 8 a.m. Saturday morning, passing by Kalmus Beach and gathering off Hyannis Port.

The first boat officially begins at 10 a.m. off the Hyannis Port Jetty.

The race kickoff party takes place Friday at the Hyannis Yacht Club.

The competitor party will be held Saturday night under the event tent on New Whale Street on Nantucket.

On Sunday, the Figawi Invitation will be held, with high school sailing teams from across the Cape and Islands brought to Nantucket to compete for the Figawi Jr. Trophy.

Over 97 trophies are awarded to the high school competitors and the Figawi Race winners on Sunday afternoon and a new Monday race will allow the skippers to head north or south towards home.

A replica of the 166 year old schooner “America”, will also take part in this weekend’s Figawi race, before participating in the Newport Bermuda Race.
