ONSET – The Onset Bay Association has cancelled this year’s Independence Day fireworks display.
Members of the association made the announcement at a recent Wareham Board of Selectmen’s meeting and cited shortcomings in money and volunteers as the reason.
“It’s a multi-faceted issue and I just don’t think we’ll be able to raise $30,000 in a very short amount of time,” said OBA President Kat Jones. “To date we’ve only raised about $1,500.”
Jones also acknowledged the lack volunteers for the event factored into the decision to cancel the July 2 display.
“I’m a little disappointed, obviously everybody is because it’s sort of a valuable resource for the town in a lot of areas, brings in a lot of business and a lot of things happening,” said Selectman Patrick Tropeano.
The shortcomings this year isn’t stopping the association from planning for the future.
The group has already fundraising efforts to continue the fireworks show next year and all donations this year will go to next year’s display.
The OBA will continue to sponsor activities on July 2, which include children’s entertainment and a blessing of the fleet.
