SANDWICH – Bringing with it a sure sign of spring, the 2018 season at Heritage Museums & Gardens kicks off Saturday.

Jennifer Madden, Director of collections and exhibitions, is excited to let people know what one of the first special events is.

“An Indy 500 exhibit in our automobile museum.  We have twenty cars.  The pace car was used for the very first race which was in 1911,” she said.

The biggest Indy exhibit to ever visit New England, it will display the 107 year history of the largest single-day sporting event in the world.  Visitors will get the chance to sit in a real Indy race car and get a taste of the traditions of Victory Lane.  The cars run the gamut of the race’s inception to 2016, whose winner will be displayed.

Ellen Spear, Heritage’s President and CEO, said they have another special exhibit on tap this year.

“We’re delighted to be bringing “Wendell Minor’s America”.  There are images of American history, wild areas, and the heartland; always with an eye toward the positive and a sense of wonder.”  Minor started his career four-decades ago, quickly becoming a preeminent illustrator of children’s books.

Among the countless other activities planned are Family Fun Fridays, The Rhododendron and Hydrangea Festivals, as well as The Adventure Park, which includes five different aerial trails between the treetops and an interpretative nature path below.
