COTUIT – The Cotuit Center for the Arts’ 2nd Wednesday Theater will present a staged reading of “The Trip to Bountiful”, a poignant drama by Horton Foote on January 11.
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on the main performance stage and admission is free.
Carrie Watts longs to escape the cramped Houston apartment where she lives with her son Ludie and daughter-in-law Jessie Mae and visit her beloved Gulf Coast hometown of Bountiful, Texas, just once before she is too old to make the trip.
Neither Ludie or Jessie Mae take her wishes seriously.
Ludie has worries of his own and his wife is bossy and self-centered.
One day, after a difficult encounter with Jessie Mae, Carrie packs a few belongings and her pension check and boards a bus for Texas.
With the help of a friendly fellow passenger and sympathetic sheriff, Carrie makes it to Bountiful, but the town is not the same as the one she left 20 years ago.
“The Trip to Bountiful” was produced on broadway in 1953 and premiered on NBC-TV the same year.
In 2014, a television remake for the Lifetime network starred Blair Underwood and Vanessa Williams.
Second Wednesday Theater is a monthly play-reading series of rarely performed classics, undiscovered gems, and exciting new works.
