350 Cape Cod to Bring Climate Strike to Cape Cod Commission

BARNSTABLE – A demonstration will be held by the regional climate action movement 350 Cape Cod at the Cape Cod Commission headquarters on Friday.

The event will be a part of the Global Climate Strike to be held that day.

Protesters are demanding that the Cape Cod Commission hold a public hearing, debate, and vote regarding the Cape Cod Regional Policy Plan’s Climate Change Amendments submitted by 350 Cape Cod in April.

Over 300 Cape Cod residents signed a petition to have that submitted to the commission.

Chris Powicki, a spokesperson for 350 Cape Cod, said in a letter that the commission hadn’t shown the petition to its members as of their meeting in May.

The demonstration will be held at 10:30 a.m.

The Cape Cod Commission recently announced a series of facilitated sub-regional community meetings scheduled for next month to solicit input on planning priorities, concerns, and barriers to moving climate adaptation and mitigation actions forward throughout the region.

According to the Commission, the community-focused, information-based discussion will inform a strategic framework and collaborative approach to address the region’s contributions to and threats from climate change.

The meetings will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 9 am at the Chatham Community Center and at 1pm at the Wellfleet Council on Aging, and on Tuesday, October 29 at 10am at the Mashpee Library and at 6pm at the Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors in Yarmouth.
