WEST BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College, in partnership with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, has created an Academic Certificate Program for those interested in becoming a Corrections Officer.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings and College President John Cox at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.

The program provides students key skills that are needed for the position and lays the foundation for further advancement.

“We’re very optimistic it’ll provide not only some internship, but some job opportunities as the students complete their degree program,” said Cox.

Every 18 months the Sheriff’s Office hires 20-25 people for full time positions and 75 percent of the current staff lives on the Cape.

“It’s a good opportunity for people who live on the Cape to get a good job that’s going to keep them here on the Cape,” said Cummings.

Cummings said he will send information on the program to Sheriffs in Plymouth County, Dukes County and Bristol County in the hopes of generating interest and more employment opportunities for successful students in the program.

The average annual salary for an entry-level correctional officer is $40,000, but Cummings added that it could go up to $100,000 with seniority, overtime and outside details.

The college is hosting an informational session for those interested in learning more about the program on Monday, May 23 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Maureen M. Wilkens Building in Room 117.

The two year certificate program will begin this fall.
