4C’s Launches New Airplane Maintenance Program

Aviation - 1PLYMOUTH – A new certification program offered by Cape Cod Community College will prepare students for both airframe and airline powerplant maintenance in one year.

The practice hangar for the new program opened on Monday.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate a half-way point in the inaugural year of the program, which began in January.

The project required $3.4 million in federal funding and $1.9 million in state funding. Hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment, including aircraft, was also brought in to benefit the program.

Plymouth-Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo said that, while the money for the program was difficult to coordinate, the job opportunities afforded to graduates will help make the Cape a more attractive area to settle down in.

“We really need to do a better job to create jobs for people that can sustain a better lifestyle,” deMacedo said.

College President John Cox said that he thought of the project after having conversations with airport managers, who told him of the need for specialists in airplane maintenance.

“It’s a growth opportunity for our region, our state and even globally,” Cox said.

According to the school, their program will be only one of five in the nation to offer the accelerated training in both airframe and powerplant maintenance.

The school has partnered with national, regional and local airlines for the program, and part of the training will take place at the Plymouth Municipal Airport’s hangar.

Entry level jobs routinely pay between $35,000 and $50,000 a year for certified technicians, according to the school.

The program cost totals over $20,000, with multiple sources of financial aid available.
