4Cs to Host Active Shooter Response Training

WEST BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College will host an active shooter training course next week to help better prepare local residents, businesses and schools.

The second annual ALICE Active Shooter Instructor Training Course will be held at the West Barnstable Campus next Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The two-day program will be hosted by College Police and taught by ALICE certified instructors.

“What it is designed to do is teach administrators and employees the skills and strategies you need to bridge the gap between the time of a violent incident or active shooter situation happening and the time that law enforcement arrives,” said Patrick Stone, the college’s director of strategic communications and marketing.

Stone said lives can be saved within that time period if there are people there who have the proper training and know what to do.

“To the people experiencing [the situation] it could be like a lifetime, but really it’s several minutes – three to five minutes – but those minutes are valuable,” Stone said.

ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, is the national leader in active shooter civilian response training.

“This training and this class that we are offering is working to empower you and us, as civilians in these situations, to make decisions that could save our lives and the lives of the people around us, and give proactive skills necessary to improve your chances of survival,” Stone said.

Attendees last year provided positive feedback for the event, which was well attended.

“That is one of the reasons why we are doing it again,” Stone said.

Stone said everybody needs to be prepared, not just students, staff and administrators in schools.

“It’s everybody – from banks, to malls, to really any business out there,” he said.

The two-day course is $595 and seats are limited.
