MIDDLEBORO – State Police continue to investigate a fiery wrong-way crash on Interstate 495 in Middleboro overnight that left five people dead, including 3 young men from Cape Cod.

Officials say the car that was struck by the wrong way driver burst into flames. All four people in that vehicle were killed. The driver of the wrong way car also died.

Police have not officially identified those involved in the crash by name, but sources and postings on the victims’ social media pages identify them as Kraig Diggs, 20, of Osterville, Jordan Galvin-Jutras, 19, of Hyannis and Jordan Fisher, 19, of Harwich.

The fourth person in that car is identified only as an 18-year-old man from West Babylon, New New York.

Two of the victims were 2015 graduates of Barnstable High School, according to Barnstable High School Principal Patrick Clark.

Clark said he was informed by the families of the two victims today.

The crash was caused by the wrong-way operator, according to police, who said all four in the car that was struck were students at Massachusetts colleges.

“The preliminary investigation leads investigators to believe the wrong-way operator struck the northbound vehicle head-on,” said Maj. Anthony Thomas with the Massachusetts State Police.

The accident happened shortly after midnight just north of Exit 3, Route 28 in Rock Village. The wrong-way car was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Police believe there was no time for the northbound car to avoid the wrong-way driver

“The ongoing investigation will determine the ongoing factors and stimuli and the reasons why this crash occurred,” Maj. Thomas said.

Throughout the day on Monday, friends were posting condolences on social media sites.

“At a loss for words right now. In the last couple of hours we lost two genuinely amazing human beings. I look back on all the memories we shared and it puts a smile on my face. From summer camp to major upsets in dodgeball tourneys, I’m so lucky to have kicked back with some cool dudes. For now hold it down for us up there. Thoughts and prayers for both of your families #RIP,” wrote Sonny Bisazza on Facebook.

“Rest In Peace Kraig Andre Diggs and Jordan Galvin. Heaven gained some beautiful angels today,” wrote Jen Peacock on social media.

It’s not yet known where the wrong-way car accessed 495. State police believe the car was not on the highway for a long period of time, making Exit 4 (Route 105) or Exit 6 (Route 44) the most likely access points.

Interstate 495 was closed down overnight was the scene was worked. It re-opened after 5 a.m. Monday.
