$50,000 In Blish Point Relief Funds Pass In House, Now Heads to Senate

Senator Julian Cyr (Middle) Reviews Areas Affected By Flooding at Blish Point

BARNSTABLE – After State Senator Julian Cyr and Representative Will Crocker paid a visit to the Blish Point neighborhood of Barnstable Village earlier this month to talk about coastal resiliency, an environmental bond bill has passed in the House attempting to opening up $50,000 to increase coastal resiliency in that area.

Now the Bill heads to the Senate and then a conference committee, ultimately seeking approval by Governor Charlie Baker.

“We are still waiting for specifics from the Town of Barnstable for their game plan which was pledged in April. So once we get specifics on the details of the plan then we can connect that, and marry that with the money, and make these improvements,” said Blish Point resident Peter Halesworth.

Areas affected by this new plan consist of Maraspin Creek and Millway Beach, in which coastal flooding has been a severe issue.

About 200 homes in the neighborhood and upwards of 30 were damaged by flood waters this winter. Discussions are continuing with town officials as well in hopes of providing additional aid to the community.

“Senator Cyr’s office has told us they will also push for that money in the environmental bond bill if not more. So this is good news that the levers of government are being pulled on Beacon Hill for the benefit of the residents of Blish Point,” said Halesworth.

Other towns impacted by this problem throughout the Cape in recent years include Sandwich, Chatham, Yarmouth, and Barnstable.
