9/11 Ceremony to Be Held Wednesday in Barnstable

BARNSTABLE – For the 11^th year, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and the Barnstable Fir Department will hold a 9/11 Ceremony in Barnstable Village.

The traditional ceremony will take place Wednesday at the Barnstable Fire Station at 9:55 a.m. and will include music by the Trinity Christian Academy and reflections by the Barnstable Fire Department and local clergy.

Deputy Chief Rick Pfautz will preside and this year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. John L. Cox, Ed.D, CPA, president of Cape Cod Community College.

Event organizer Judy Scarafile said it’s important not to forget what happened nearly 20 years ago.

“It’s so important because it entirely changed the world. That single event made everything different from that day forward, whether it was business, personal lives, military.”

“Look at the number of people who have scarified their lives to fight for our freedom, which became extremely evident that day that we had to fight for it.”

At 4 p.m. a second joint ceremony and service, held so that those who cannot make the earlier service can attend, will begin at the fire station with Barnstable Fire Chief Frank Pulsifer leading the program and will feature soloist Marc Howard.

The ceremony will then process a quarter mile up Main Street to the church.

The procession will be led by Dave Knauer on Bagpipes, the Barnstable Police Honor Guard and Cape Cod Cub Scout Pack 54.

“We have the Cub Scouts participate, we have the fire and police in Barnstable participate, it’s just an out pouring I think that’s really important,” Scarafile said.

“I just think it gives everyone an opportunity to reflect and really be respectful and appreciate what we have in America because it can’t be topped.”

Reverend Dr. Libby Gibson will officiate at the service.

In addition to Dr. John Cox, Barnstable Fire and Police Departments and Pack 54 will participate in the service.

A reception will immediately follow in the Old English gardens of St. Mary’s.

Barnstable Fire Stations is located at 3249 Main Street in Barnstable.

Several other 9/11 event are also scheduled across Cape Cod.
