AAA Estimates Near-Record Levels for Memorial Day Travel

trafficHYANNIS – According to AAA, more than 38 million Americans will travel during the Memorial Day Weekend holiday, which is the second-highest travel volume on record, and the highest since 2005.

Nearly 90 percent of travelers will do so by car, which can be attributed to the lowest gas prices in 11 years.

“We are enjoying and benefitting from right now the lowest gasoline prices in 11 years headed into Memorial Day weekend and there’s no doubt that’s driving a lot of traffic,” Massachusetts spokesperson for AAA Northeast Mary Maguire said.

The latest AAA survey indicates that on average a gallon of gas in Massachusetts is $2.25, down 41 cents from this time last year.

Locally, travel numbers will also mirror national trends.

“In Massachusetts, we’re projecting that 844,000 Mass. Residents will travel, and of those 786,000 will go by car,” Maguire said.

With the uptick in travel, AAA also expects to aid more than 350,000 motorists during the holiday weekend, with the primary reasons being dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.

AAA urges drivers to check the condition of their battery and tires before hitting the road and to also have vehicles inspected before travelling.
